The following is a quote from an article entitled "Tourette's Syndrome and Dopamine," published by the Society for Neuroscience

But such a view, in my opinion, has been absolutely discredited by the success of behavioral therapies when applied to mental illnesses. My own experience as related is a testament to the potency of non-surgical, non-pharmaceutical techniques in certain instances of mental illness. Psychological afflictions do exist in fact and effective techniques to treat them are sometimes available that would have absolutely no efficacy in regard to physical illnesses.

Disorders affecting the media of the eye are included under ophthalmological disorders. Diseases of retina may cause visual impairment owing to involvement of the Peripheral neurones, the rods or cones. Conditions like retinities, chorioretinitis, vascular diseases, retinal detachment and hemorrhages cause patchy or even complete loss of vision depending on the extent of lesion. The optic nerve may be affected by degenerative disorders, infections, neoplasms, toxins, trauma or vascular insufficiency. Such disorders begin as a central scotoma or a partial field defect and proceed to complete visual loss in that eye.

The AIRIS II MRI scanners are a new development in this specialty. With its patient-friendly design, these scanners greatly reduce the discomforts experienced by children, claustrophobic, physically disabled and obese people who have to undergo MRI. An AIRIS II MRI scanner is open on all sides and allows the patients to be examined in a completely relaxed and comfortable position. Almost all these scanners have an operating field with 0.3T strength and produce quality scanning images in better resolution and contrast.

As you can see, the simple tool known as the neurological reflux hammer has quite a history. It was particularly beneficial when it was created because doctors in the 1800's did not have a way to see on the inside of a patient's body. Instead, they relied on the results of a reflex hammer and other diagnostic tools. Rather than create a tool from scratch, the idea of the percussion hammer was used for years. It was later altered to build a better tool that was more suitable for checking tendon reflexes. Many variations have been made sense then to test various tendon reflexes throughout the body.

ADHD, what is it exactly? Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a developmental disorder usually causing inattention, distractibility, impulsivity, and hyperactivity in children starting before the age of seven. ADHD is a chronic disorder that occurs in 3-5% of children worldwide.

Beyond even ADD/ADHD, research has shown that mood disorders such as depression or schizophrenia can be worsened by diets rich in gluten. In fact schizophrenia has been associated with gluten sensitivity for several decades, when research demonstrated a link between a removal of gluten from the diet and an improvement in the patient's symptoms. Also, schizophrenia is less prevalent in areas where people it less wheat.

There is reasonable evidence of neurological problems in Celiac disease (CD) even those well treated on a gluten-free diet should undergo periodic neurological screening. Peripheral neuropathy is found in almost half of people with CD. Previously, neurological complications in Celiac disease were reported to be as high as 36% or more than a third. Some unexplained neurological problems are present but not recognized by the patient or their doctor in many patients and some have several problems. Unfortunately, since brain imaging is not routinely done or recommended in those who are newly diagnosed we don't really know how high these numbers may be really be. More staggering is the fact that we are still learning about people who fail to meet diagnostic criteria for Celiac disease but are being found to have gluten related neurological problems that respond to a gluten-free diet.

In clinical practice, it is easier to assess articulation and fluency on the one hand and reading and writing on the other. In lesions anterior to the Rolandic fissure, the former are more, affected whereas in posterior lesions, the latter are more affected. These are therefore referred to as anterior (also called expressive0 and posterior (also called receptive) aphasias.
